The nature reserve Iški morost ( Slovenian Naravni rezervat Iški morost , 'Iška moor') is a protected area near Ljubljana (Ljubljana) in Slovenia.

Location and landscape

The reserve is located just a few kilometers southwest of Ljubljana, between Ljubljanica , Brest (at Ig ), Jezero and Podpeč (at Brezovica ), in the middle of the Ljubljana Moors ( the Ljubljana moor ) . On the Iška - a right tributary of the Ljubljanica - it covers 65 hectares of the most extensive, closed, preserved wetland meadows in this characteristic landscape of central Slovenia. It is listed in the IUCN Category Ia Strict Nature Reserve , but is nationally only designated as a nature reserve ( Naravni rezervat in Slovenian , RS).

The reserve was set up especially for the protection of the corncrake ( crex crex ), an animal species that receives special attention in bird protection. Since 2004 it has been managed by the Društvo za opazovanje in proučevanje ptic Slovenije (Society for the Observation and Examination of Birds Slovenia, DOPPS - BirdLife Slovenia), and as part of the Vzpostavitev dolgoročnega varstva kosca Crex crex v Sloveniji project ('Establishing the long-term protection of Crex crex in Slovenia '), a LIFE project. The reserve forms an important retreat area in the Laibach Moor, which is designated as a Natura 2000 area in accordance with the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive and the Bird Protection Directive , which is generally rather poorly developing.

There is a strict ban on entry. The Koščeva učna pod ( 400 m ) leads from the road to an observation station, and there is a 2½-kilometer circular route. Through these nature trails, the strict reserve can also be experienced by visitors, and there are guided tours.
