The Dhünn nature reserve runs along the Dhünn in the Leverkusen urban area between Hummelsheim and Wiesdorf .

Flora and fauna

The designation as a nature reserve took place in 2006 because of the importance of the area for the establishment of a coherent ecological network of special protected areas in Europe ( Natura 2000 ). It serves to restore, maintain and develop the following natural habitats of Community interest according to Annex I of Directive 92/43 / EEC.

• Alder-ash and softwood alluvial forests (91E0), priority habitat,
• Running waters with underwater vegetation (3260),
• Hainsimsen-Buchenwald (9110),

and also for the conservation of the following wild animal species of Community interest according to Annex II of Directive 92/43 / EEC:

• Bullhead ( Cottus gobio )
• River lamprey ( Lampetra fluviatilis )
• Brook lamprey ( Lampetra planeri )
• Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ).

Further protection is required

• for the maintenance and development of the Dhünn as a near-natural, linear, continuous, cool, oxygen-rich, lively flowing and deadwood-rich body of water with a near-natural bottom with loose, sandy to fine gravel bottom substrates and quiet areas with organic layers and with natural debris transport,
• for the maintenance and development of woody river banks,
• to protect the water against nutrient and pollutant inputs,
• for the protection and development of the invertebrate fauna as well as the typical aquatic fish fauna with a functioning reproduction as a food base for the kingfisher and for the dipper.

The nature reserve is part of the FFH area Dhünn u. Eifgenbach .
