North Park Wetlands Nature Reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nordpark wetland is located in the Nordpark area in the independent city of Mönchengladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia . The nature reserve is located in the Mönchengladbach district of Rheindahlen-Land, east of Rheindahlen , directly adjacent to Borussia Park , home of Borussia Mönchengladbach .

The original vegetation consisted mainly of a closed birch-oak forest , a plant community of the silver birch and the pedunculate oak . Since both tree species have no special demands on their environment, they can also cope with the acidic, nutrient-poor pseudogley soil of the north park. Due to the soil conditions, cleared areas could not be permanently won over for arable farming and soon turned into heathland .

meaning

In an expert opinion on species and biotope protection in the course of the construction of the new stadium for Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1995, a large number of ecologically interesting areas were identified. A total of 23 hectares of compensation area was calculated, which should be created in other districts of Mönchengladbach. With the ordinary water hose , the Water crowfoot , the Carex Leporina and bulrush were conservation properties and protect plants values detected on the Northern parking area. In addition to eleven dragonflies and four amphibian species, the report identified the habitats of the blackcap , the reed warbler , various water frogs , crested newts , the short and long-winged sword insect and the southern rush damsel , which are on the red list , in the area.

Favored by the relatively quiet and protected location in a military restricted area, some wet forests, temporary small bodies of water and soil monuments such as shallow caves were able to survive in the western and southwestern part of the area . Similar valuable biotopes in the vicinity suffered massive damage after the Second World War, including the disposal of building rubble (see Rheydter Stadtwald). However, the progressive development presented the Nordpark especially for the Borussia Park and the training center, including infrastructure, long a serious threat to the ecological inventory. It is only after the intervention of the district government through the Higher Landscape Authority was established in 2003 an area of about 11.65 hectares as a nature reserve in Mönchengladbach identified with the key number MG-015.
