features

All kinds of Naucratinae are laterally somewhat flattened, elongated and covered with small cycloid scales. They are 57 ( Seriola peruana ) to 250 cm ( Seriola lalandi ) long. The sideline is flaky. They have ten to eleven trunk vertebrae and 14 to 15, rarely 13 tail vertebrae. The anal fin is shorter or exactly as long as the distance between the pelvic fins and anal fin and shorter than the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin has 5 spines. The pectoral and pelvic fins are medium in size. The caudal fin is forked. In the caudal fin skeleton there are 3 epuralia and hypuralia , which have grown together to form two bone plates (not in Seriola ). The premaxillary is mobile. A supramaxillary (a jawbone) is present. The number of Branchiostegal rays is seven.
