Navais is a place and a former municipality in northern Portugal .

history

The place is first recorded as De Nabales in the early 11th century in the episcopal registers of Braga . In the royal surveys of 1220 and 1258 it is listed as Sancti Salvatoris de Nabaes . Until the beginning of the 16th century it was known as Nabais , and since then it has had its current name.

The municipality of Navais belonged to Barcelos until 1386 , since then it has been a municipality of Póvoa de Varzim .

Until 1933, Aguçadoura also belonged to Navais.

With the municipal reorganization in 2013 , the municipalities of Navais and Aguçadoura were dissolved and merged to form the new municipality of Aguçadoura e Navais .

Navais was a municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Póvoa de Varzim in the district of Porto . The community had an area of ​​3.6 km² and 1479 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

With the territorial reform in Portugal on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Navais and Aguçadoura were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Aguçadoura e Navais . The seat of the new municipality was Aguçadoura, while the previous municipal administration in Navais remained as a citizens' office.
