Aguçadoura is a place and a former municipality in northern Portugal .

The place is known as a surf spot and as the site of the world's first commercially operated wave power plant.

history

In the royal surveys of 1258, the place was noted as a small settlement Petra Aguçadoira in the municipality of Navais . The place developed only slowly, the situation in the dunes with its sand movements made life and livelihood too difficult .

In the second half of the 19th century, the place then experienced an upswing, when the reclamation of the dunes greatly expanded the agricultural area and made productive arable farming possible from then on. In 1873 the residents built their first chapel.

In 1934 Aguçadoura became an independent municipality by being separated from Navais.

On June 22, 2011 Aguçadoura was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).

With the municipal reorganization in 2013 , the municipalities of Aguçadoura and Navais were dissolved and merged to form the new municipality of Aguçadoura e Navais .

economy

The municipality has traditionally been an important producer of agricultural products, especially vegetables and flowers. The reason for this is the fertile fields and the seaweed that was previously used as a fertilizer . The A Seareira cultivation cooperative was founded here in 1917 , the nucleus of today's regional cultivation association HORPOZIM ( Associação dos Horticultores da Póvoa de Varzim ), which is based in Aguçadoura.

Tourism on the sandy beaches is important, especially for surfers , who are drawn to the strong waves here.

Electricity was produced in a Pelamis wave power station off the coast of Aguçadoura . It was founded in 2003 after 20 years of research and development work at the Instituto Superior Técnico and was put into regular operation in 2008. It was the first of its kind in the world. In 2014 its operation was closed due to technical and financial problems. From 2011 to 2016, a prototype of a floating wind power plant was also located 5 km from Aguçadoura; it produced electricity with an energy of 16 GWh and was then dismantled.
