The Neckarinsel in Tübingen is a nearly one kilometer long island in the Neckar , which was created by branching off a parallel channel to regulate the Neckar water level in 1910–1911. It extends from the headland west of the Ammertalbahn bridge, the so-called iron , to the Eberhards bridge .

geography

About half of the island (the eastern part) is taken up by the plane tree avenue . In the western area is the so-called Grove of Sighs, which is criss-crossed by sometimes winding forest paths. To the west of the avenue bridge is the so-called grove , at the end of which under the bridge of the Ammertalbahn a small tunnel leads to the western end of the island, a plateau lined with land on the so-called Spitz or iron .

Burned plane tree

Illegal campfires and barbecues are sometimes held here, against which the public order office takes action, among other things because of the fire hazard for the plane tree avenue (in February 2012 a plane tree burned).

The water of the Neckar is only knee-deep in many places.

There are two monuments on the island: the Wildermuth in the west and the Silcher monument in the middle .

Events

Every year, at the beginning of June, the punt race takes place in Tübingen , where the Neckar Island is circled. At the end of October, bright yellow squeaky ducks conquer the Neckar at the duck race, which is also held annually.

The Neckarinsel was also the scene of memorable theater events: The Lindenhof Melchingen theater hosted the open-air performances with great success

  • "Holderlin. Tübingen. Tower. "1. Tübingen Summer Theater 1986 (in coproduction with the Zimmer Theater Tübingen ), and" ... if with the Neckar down (Holderlin). An evening walk ", summer theater 1993 and 1995.
  • Since 2007 there have been repeated open-air productions by the LTT and room theater.

The summer island event, organized by TüGast, has existed since 2003, which first took place on Platanenallee for a few years and then moved to the plant lake for safety and nature conservation reasons, but kept the name.
