The Tübinger Platanenallee is located on the Neckar Island . This runs in front of the old town parallel to the Neckar front . It begins at the Eberhardsbrücke and ends at the Silcher memorial , where the path continues into the so-called “ Grove of Sighs ”.

With its ancient, huge plane trees, the avenue invites you to stroll, you can play boules there and have a view of the Neckar front . In summer you can sit there in the grass, watch the punt rides and watch pigeons, swans, ducks and rowers.

To the east, at the “eye of the needle”, there is a pigeon tower, in which eggs are taken from clutches of pigeons in order to limit the population.

The Hölderlin Tower is clearly visible and can be photographed from her in the eastern part (towards the Eberhards Bridge).

With almost 200 years, the avenue is the oldest still existing tree species in Germany (the Alte Lindenallee between the Wildermuth-Gymnasium and the SV 03 sports field is much older in parts, it was laid out in 1508).

Considerations were given to cutting down the plane trees because they were supposed to have reached the age limit and to replace them with new plantings. After protests, attempts are now being made to preserve the trees through special care; Among other things, some particularly sprawling trees stabilize each other with relatively inconspicuous steel cables.

history

From 1819 onwards, the Kastanienallee and Akazienallee were planned in Tübingen , followed by the plane tree avenue. Contrary to a long story told by city guides, this was probably not created by the city's last executioner , Johann Georg Friedrich Belthle , who died in 1824 , but later, in 1828. This was the result of a dendrochronological study of the age of the plane trees that the city of Tübingen contributed to commissioned by the University of Hohenheim . The results of the study were published under the headline “The young old venerable” and the subtitle “Executioner story wrong” on May 25, 2013 in the Schwäbisches Tagblatt . Accordingly, the trees germinated between 1822 and 1824. The young plane tree avenue can already be seen in an engraving from 1832. Following these findings, the city archives investigated the city files from this time and discovered an invoice dated January 28, 1828 from the exotic state tree nursery in Hohenheim for the delivery of 96 plane trees, 60 poplars and four tulip trees. 32 guilders were paid for the plane trees.

Today there are still 84 plane trees.
