The Tübingen punt race is a traditional student boat race on the Neckar . As such, it is a locally significant and nationally known tourist event. It takes place annually - for a number of years always on Corpus Christi day - the participants are mainly local student groups with their punting boats . The punt race is one of the highlights of the university summer semester ; when the weather is nice, around 15,000 spectators regularly follow the event.

History and meaning

The race was launched in 1956 by members of the Tübinger Lichtenstein student association . At this point in time, the use of punts in Tübingen already had a long tradition. The first pictorial representation of a punt in connection with Tübingen comes from the 16th century, shown in the Cosmographia Sebastian Münsters . The first photo evidence of the use of punting boats for amusement purposes by student associations can finally be found in the 19th century.

The punt race itself developed from an inauguration ceremony for the newly acquired punt of the student union. The Lichtensteiners competed with their boat "Bluthund" (today Kahn # 77) against six other student associations. The first arbitration court was the AV Virtembergia, because they could not participate due to the lack of a boat. Even in the early days of the competition, teams in disguise took part in the punt race. Since 1967, in addition to winning the race, a prize has been awarded for the most original costume.

The field of participants in the event, which was originally limited to student connections, has been opened up to other groups over time. The event has now become an integral part of the city's calendar of events and a tourist attraction that regularly counts 10,000 visitors, with a peak between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors.

Comparable student poking traditions exist under the designation "punting" (English: to punt = poke, poke) in Oxford and Cambridge in the UK .

Competition conditions

Only non-motorized wooden punting boats are allowed to race. A team consists of eight people including the “poke”, seven of whom try to accelerate the boat further with the help of their hands or to fight off the other boats. With the exception of the punting rod, aids of any kind are prohibited. The details of the competition conditions are subject to frequent changes and correspond to the requirements of the punting court, which consists of members of the organizing group and changes annually.

The punt race traditionally begins with a costume parade of all punt teams on the Neckar. The last 50 participating boats and their teams present themselves to the spectators and the jury of the punt court in self-made disguises. A jury will select the winner of the costume competition from all participants and receive a special prize.

The subsequent race leads around the Tübingen Neckar Island. The length of the competition route is around 2.5 km, the winner crosses the finish line after around twenty minutes. The starting point is a footbridge west of the island, from which the island must be bypassed to the north. The turning point is located immediately east of the island, on a pillar of the adjoining Neckar bridge. Instead of a simple turning maneuver, however, the pillar must be bypassed in the form of a loop. The decisive part of the race is the gap between Neckarinsel and Neckarbrücke, known as the bottleneck , as it has to be crossed twice by each team. It is regularly the scene of scuffles when the poking paths of the outgoing teams at the top cross with those of the main field, which is also starting at the turn, and the participants thus block each other. After having passed the eye of the needle, the Neckar Island is bypassed upstream in the south, the destination is behind a railway bridge on the western tip of the island.

The competition ended with the awarding of a trophy and drinking of liver pods in the past on the so-called iron , near the finish line at the west end of the Neckar Island, and today on a raft. Traditionally, the winners of the race receive the challenge cup together with a barrel of beer donated by the city of Tübingen and undertake to organize the evening victory celebration. The members of the losing team have to drink half a liter of cod liver oil per head in front of the spectators and usually act as the organizer for the race in the following year, which is also connected with a one-year break as a participant. Cod liver oil is also available for boats disqualified for violating the rules. A suckling pig as a special price goes to the team with the best costumes.

There are regular disputes about the type and manner of the specific event. Since the wording of the regulations is frequently changed, there are always inconsistencies in this regard. In 2003, the rules before the race were tightened so that only student groups were allowed to participate in the race. As a result, this race was boycotted by many punting drivers and another, open race was held afterwards. However, this sharp separation was lifted in the following year.

a The losing team is usually the host of the next year.
b Has only been awarded since 1967.
cTwo races took place in 2003 because of a tightening of the regulations. Race 1 was held exclusively by student groups, while race 2 was open to all interested groups.
dThe AV Cheruskia Tübingen team was disqualified for "deliberate loss" and unsporting behavior . The punishment intended for this violation of the rules (drinking cod liver oil) was demonstratively refused.
