Needle Iceland (literally translated from English Needle Island ) is an irregularly shaped, cliff-like island in the archipelago Heard and McDonald Islands in the southern Indian Ocean . It is located 300 m west of McDonald Island in the group of McDonald Islands .
Scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions mapped it in 1948 and gave it the descriptive name because it is reminiscent of a rock needle .
