Synagogue (Neheim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The construction of the Neheim synagogue in Neheim (today the city of Arnsberg ) on Mendener Strasse began in 1875. It was inaugurated on October 20, 1876 and from then on it was used as a place of worship for a long time .

The manufacturer Noah Wolff is considered to be the main initiator.

During the November pogrom on the night of November 9th to 10th, 1938, the National Socialists also desecrated the Neheim synagogue and largely destroyed the interior. Because of the fire hazard for the old town, they decided not to set the building on fire.

After the Second World War , the synagogue was used as a storage room. The condition of the building deteriorated over the years. A demolition permit issued on October 20, 1966 was not implemented. In 1982 the building was listed as a historical monument .

In the mid-1980s, the building, which was declared a storage shed in the purchase agreement, was acquired by two private individuals from Neheim and extensively restored. The restoration of the interior as well as the outside area was described as exemplary by the Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Münster. The careful restoration of the interior resulted in what is probably the best-preserved synagogue in Westphalia. The building was used commercially in the following years.

In 2001 the building was acquired by the Jägerverein 1834 eV Neheim. The hunting club and other users of the house hold regular club meetings, concerts, readings, exhibitions, receptions, honors and similar events in the building.
