Part of the EU
Nei til EU is a Norwegian non-partisan organization that was founded in 1988 with the aim of preventing Norway from joining the European Union . The first study and working groups were set up in Stavanger and Levanger ( Verdal ).
development
Initially it was an umbrella organization for local associations and citizen groups, individual memberships were not provided. It was not until 1990 that Nei til EF ( EF: europeiske fellesskap, European Community ) was founded as a nationwide membership organization with a democratic structure and an annual general meeting. "Nei til EU" was the most important force on the critics' side in the 1994 referendum in Norway on joining the EU. The association had reached its greatest attraction with around 140,000 members.
After the referendum was won, there was disagreement about the future role. The organization was finally maintained to politically argue against Norway's membership in the European Economic Area (EEA) and to be prepared for a new referendum on EU membership.
The EU now has around 22,000 members, 19 regional offices and over 150 active local groups.
