The Neidlinger waterfall is located on the Swabian Alb near the town of Neidlingen in the Esslingen district . The waterfall is around 20 meters below the two cave-like source outlets of the Lindach , near below the Reußenstein castle ruins on the Pfanne district in a forest .

The karst water, which comes mainly from the eastern spring outlet, tumbles down several meters of steeply layered rock cascades in order to then develop a nose that grows upwards and forwards with cushions of moss and tuff . From this nose the water fell about seven to eight meters in free fall.

The structure of nose and waterfall lost some of its attractiveness when, during a cold winter in the middle of the 20th century, the growing stone could no longer carry the ice load and broke off. Nevertheless, the waterfall and its surroundings have remained a popular destination.

It is about a kilometer walk from the Bahnhöfle hiking car park . The rock formations and vegetation that line the path are worth seeing. On the descent to the viewpoint above the waterfall, there is a memorial stone entwined with evergreens for a man who died while felling wood.

The Neidlinger waterfall has been recognized as an important geotope and geopoint of the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb since 2019 .

Protected areas

Tufa limestone sources can be endangered by various factors, for example mechanical destruction of the fragile tufa formations when animals and people are treadled.

Under the name Neidlinger waterfall and flowing waters in the Gewann Pfanne , the waterfall and the subsequent right source stream of the Lindach are designated as extensive natural monuments under the protected area number 811-60432804 . The 1.9 hectare area was placed under protection by the Esslingen District Office by ordinance of July 15, 1997. It is part of the landscape protection area No. 1.16.016 Neidlinger Tal , the FFH area No. 7423-341 Neidlinger Alb and the bird sanctuary 7422-441 Middle Swabian Alb .
