Nelsons Island is a small, uninhabited island in the Chagos Archipelago and is politically part of the British Indian Ocean Territory .
The approximately 40 hectare island represents the northernmost and easternmost island of the Great Chagos Bank (" Great Chagos Bank "), which has the world's most extensive atoll structure. Nelsons Island is much closer to Solomon Atoll (about 40 km northwest) than to the nearest islands of the Great Chagos Bank, the Three Brothers , more than 100 km away.
