Former synagogue

The Neolog Synagogue in Košice , a town in eastern Slovakia , was built in 1926/27. The synagogue in the center of the city now houses the Philharmonic .

history

In 1924, the neological community in Košice exchanged its synagogue with that of the status quo ante community. While they only rebuilt their new synagogue according to their needs, the neological community tore down their newly acquired building and built a completely new synagogue. This was completed in 1927. After the Second World War , in which the majority of the Jewish population was murdered, the city administration took over the building in the 1950s and significantly rebuilt it. A not very beautiful vestibule replaced the previous portico , which was adapted to the overall style . The interior has also undergone major changes. The large metallic Star of David on the dome was removed and integrated into the Holocaust memorial in the Jewish cemetery in Košice .

The State Philharmonic has been housed here since the renovation.

architecture

The synagogue building is an outstanding example of Hungarian neo-baroque architecture from the interwar period . The monumental structure is dominated by a dome with a diameter of 24 m and a height of 37 m. The (demolished) columns of the portico were 25 m high.

The building offered space for 1,100 people, who were spread over the main hall on the ground floor and the semicircular women's gallery.
