The Neolog Synagogue in Lučenec , a Slovak town in the district of the same name , was built between 1924 and 1925. It is also known as the New Neolog Synagogue . After years of decay, it was carefully restored from 2015 and is now an intercultural center.

history

The neological community built a synagogue in Lučenec in 1863, but it became too small after the First World War. Therefore, the building was demolished in 1924 and a new, larger synagogue was built on the same site. This was used for church services until 1944. Almost the entire Jewish population was deported to Auschwitz and murdered there. The building was damaged but not completely destroyed in World War II.

Partial repairs were made after the war. The synagogue was later partly used as a warehouse, partly it was also empty. During this time, the interior was almost completely stolen by the population.

Thorough renovations were carried out from 2015. The building has since been open to the public and is used as an intercultural center.

architecture

The construction was carried out under the direction of the Hungarian architect Lipót Baumhorn , who was responsible for several synagogues in Hungary and Slovakia.

In this synagogue, too, its typical eclectic style is recognizable from elements of Byzantine architecture , Moorish architecture and Art Nouveau .

The colossal building is crowned by a mighty dome. The entrance area is on the west side; there are also two large stair towers. The stairs lead to the women's gallery, which frames the main hall on three sides. Two more, somewhat smaller stair towers are on the east side. Inside there was the Torah shrine , above which there is a rose window with a Star of David in the middle.

Two pillars on each side support the gallery and the ceiling. The marble bima stood in the middle of the room and is no longer there.
