The Neoplan MIC ( Metroliner in carbon design ) was a midibus with a body made of carbon and glass fiber composites. The type N 8012 had a length of 10.58 m, the N 8008 of 7.84 m. From version N 4012 only prototypes were built, they were used at the BVG in Berlin from 1990 to 1992 . In 1994 the type N 8006 produced with a length of 6.99 m. The 12-meter version N planned in 1991 4016 did not come to fruition.

Model history

The Metroliner presented in May 1988 had an entry height of 32 cm and was thus an early low-floor bus . The plastic body made it 1/3 lighter than comparable buses. The shape was rounded, windshield wipers, for example, were placed under the front hood to create low air resistance. The large model had double doors in the front and in the middle, the small version had double doors in the middle and a single-leaf swinging door in the front, the N 8006 only one door in the front central area. Due to the material used, the durability of the buses should be great, Auwärter gave a 30-year return guarantee for the vehicles and a recycling concept. Shortly after its market launch, the bus received the “ Bus Of The Year 1990” award . In 1992 over 100 pieces were manufactured. Also in 1992 the production was relocated to Plauen in order to reduce the production costs at lower wage costs.

Alternative drives for the light bus were used very quickly. The N 8008 E was the electric version. It had a range of around 40 km and was up to 50 km / h. The electric version of the N 8008 used in Florence , Dordrecht in the Netherlands and Uppsala , among others . In Germany, the Varta Messeblitz was on the road at the Hanover Fair, in Berlin at the radio exhibition and in the old exhibition center in Munich. Three of them were in use at Arthur Franke Messebus KG in Berlin together with several Neoplan N-906 unibuses. The N 8012 GE was in use in Bozen and Uppsala, Sweden, as a gas hybrid version. From 1999 the municipality of Oberstdorf used a hydrogen-powered fuel cell bus .

Later projects with fuel cell hybrid drives were realized by the Proton Motor company from Puchheim. Proton Motor also owned an N 8012 for demonstration purposes.

As the predecessor of the low-floor construction, the N 906 T (Telebus) , the successor to the N 6108 DE hybrid in electric drive technology. The pre-production models were MIC N 4008 and MIC N 4012 as well as a first prototype MIC N 4009 called. Pre-production models had small deviations in the dimensions. Later models were called carbon liners.

  2. Even after series production was discontinued, there were always various small series of vehicles based on the Neoplan MIC models in line operation to test alternative drives.

Traffic mobile

A Metroliner 8012 that is not used as a regular bus service is the Borken police car . The transport vehicle was also available as an H0 model from the manufacturer Rietze (No. 60159).

RV conversion

Some of the N 8008s that had been retired from regular service were converted into mobile homes in- house.
