Neoraimondia arequipensis is a species of plant in the genus Neoraimondia from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Neoraimondia arequipensis grows shrubby, branches at the base and does not form a trunk. The massive, upright shoots reach heights of up to 10 meters with diameters of up to 40 centimeters. There are 5 to 8 ribs . The cone-like, conspicuous areoles are up to 5 centimeters long. Of the up to 7 spines per areole, some are up to 25 centimeters long.

The greenish white to pinkish red flowers reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters. Your pericarpel is covered with short hairs and sometimes with inconspicuous thorns. The spherical fruits are purple in color and have a diameter of up to 7 centimeters. They are covered with brownish, felty areoles that have short thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Neoraimondia arequipensis is common in the Peruvian regions of Lima , Ica and Arequipa along the coasts and on the lower slopes of the Andes . The first description as Cereus arequipensis was published in 1833 by Franz Julius Ferdinand Meyen . Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Neoraimondia in 1937 .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

Neoraimondia arequipensis subsp. arequipensis
Neoraimondia arequipensis subsp. roseiflora

The subspecies differ in the number of ribs and the color of the flowers.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
