The Goldman bush rat ( Neotoma goldmani ) is a rodent from the genus of the American bush rat ( Neotoma ). It occurs in Mexico. The art epithet honors Edward Alphonso Goldman , who in 1902 collected the holotype together with Edward William Nelson .

The Goldman bush rat is a small bush rat that reaches an overall length of 265 to 285 mm, a tail length of 113 to 136 mm, a hind foot length of 27 to 31 mm, and an ear length of 25 to 29 mm. The top is gray-leather-colored, the flanks ocher-leather-colored. The back is speckled with black-tipped hair, which is abundant, especially on the rump. The head and face are gray with an ocher-buff wash on the cheeks. The underside and feet are white. The relatively short tail contrasts with a dark brown to almost black top and white underside. The skull is small, light and smoothly rounded. The frontal bone is flattened interorbitally , broad at the front and not expanded at the back. The nasal bone is narrowly wedge-shaped.

distribution and habitat

The Goldman bush rat occurs in the Mexican central plateau from the southeastern Chihuahua to northeastern Querétaro. The species is found in rocky and desert habitats at altitudes between 1,160 and 2,320 m.

Way of life

Pregnant females were observed in late March, July and August, lactating females in July and August, and juveniles in August, September and October. The nests are made of sticks and grass in deep crevices.
