Neottiglossa leporina is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).
features
The bugs are 5–6 mm long. The pronotum and the scutellum (shield) usually have a light central line. The scutellum protrudes far beyond the leathery part of the hemielytres . The sides of the scutellum are approximately parallel for more than half the length. There is usually a black spot at the end of the scutellum. The membrane is light. The two outer antenna elements are black. The basal antennae are yellow-brown. The legs are also yellow-brown.
distribution
The bug species is widespread in southern Europe. To the north, the occurrence extends to Central Europe.
Way of life
The bugs suckle on various sweet grasses (Poaceae). The species overwinters as an imago.
Taxonomy
The species was first described by Gottlieb August Herrich-Schäffer as Pentatoma leporina in 1830. In addition to the nominate form, a subspecies was described:
- Neottiglossa leporina leporina ( Herrich-Schaeffer , 1830)
- Neottiglossa leporina valenciana Wagner , 1960
The subspecies Neottiglossa leporina valenciana is said to differ from the typical subspecies by the shorter and wider shape, it was only given from the area of Valencia (Spain). It was developed by VV Derzhansky with the typical subspecies synonymised and is not generally recognized today.
