Ludwig Otto Prince of Salm , also Ludwig Otto of Salm-Neufville, Wild and Rhine Count of Dhaun (born October 24, 1674 in Aachen ; † November 23, 1738 in Anholt ), was a German Imperial Prince and the fifth Prince of Salm . With him the old princely line Salm-Dhaun-Neufville of the noble family Salm ends .

Life

Ludwig Otto was the only son of Prince Karl Theodor Otto zu Salm and his second wife, the titular Countess Palatine Luise Marie von der Pfalz , a daughter of Eduard von der Pfalz and Anna Gonzaga . Ludwig Otto initially received training for service in the imperial army of Leopold I. Around 1700, the year he married Albertine Jeannette (Johannette) Catherine Françoise von Nassau-Hadamar (1679–1716), a daughter of Prince Moritz Heinrich von Nassau– Hadamar from his third marriage to Countess Anna Ludovica von Manderscheid-Blankenheim (1654–1692), he settled in Anholt to complete the work his father had begun to convert Anholt Castle into a baroque residence . Under the direction of Ludwig Otto, the facility was expanded until 1721 in such a way that it corresponded to the representative framework of an imperial prince of his time. Until his death, Ludwig Otto maintained court, riding, hunting and music. From his parents in 1710 he inherited the counties Rheingrafenstein and Kyrburg , the principality of Salm in the Vosges, the dominion of Anholt in Westphalia, part of the dominions of Vinstingen and Neufville-sur-Moselle , the Rhine and Isselzolls near Arnhem and other goods.

Three daughters arose from his marriage to Albertine Jeanette:

In his will, Ludwig Otto designated the son-in-law of his eldest daughter, Nikolaus Leopold zu Salm-Salm, a scion from a side line of his house, as the heir. Since this inheritance was contested, it came about that Nikolaus Leopold had to leave part of the inheritance to his cousins, the brothers Johann Dominik and Philipp Joseph zu Salm-Kyrburg .
