Neowerdermannia vorwerkii is a species of plant in the genus Neowerdermannia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). A common name in Argentinais "Achacana". The thickened taproot and the plant body are edible.
description
Neowerdermannia vorwerkii grows with depressed spherical, dark gray-green shoots 6 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The 16 or more ribs are divided into conspicuous, triangular cusps , between which the areoles are sunk. The 1 to 3 brownish to grayish central spines are often hooked and up to 2 centimeters long. The up to 10 curved and brownish radial spines have a length of up to 1.7 centimeters.
The white or light to bright purple- pink flowers are 1.8 to 2 centimeters long and have the same diameter. The spherical fruits are initially green, then become reddish and are up to 5 millimeters in size.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Neowerdermannia vorwerkii is common in Bolivia and northern Argentina at altitudes of 3000 to 4000 meters. It was first described in 1930 by Alberto Vojtěch Frič . Synonyms are Gymnocalycium vorwerkii (Frič) Hutchison , Weingartia vorwerkii (Frič) Backeb. , Sulcorebutia vorwerkii (Backeb.) FHBrandt and Coryphantha vorwerkii (Frič) Halda & Malina .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
