The Nepal Rastra Bank ( NRB , Nepali : नेपाल राष्ट्र बैंक ) is the central bank of Nepal based in Kathmandu . The bank's seven branch offices are located in Biratnagar , Birganj , Dhangadhi , Janakpur , Nepalganj , Pokhara and Siddharthanagar . On 15 July 2008 the bank had total assets of 211 billion Nepalese rupees .
Nepal Rastra Bank was established in 1956 on the basis of the Central Bank Law of 1955 ( Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2012 (1955) ). A new law from 2002 ( Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058 (2002) ) confirmed the function as central bank. On March 22, 2010, Yuba Raj Khatiwada became chairman (governor) of the bank.
The main tasks of the central bank are to ensure price stability to support economic development, to provide the banking sector with liquidity, and to monitor and promote the banking sector.
