The spot-bellied eagle-owl ( Bubo nipalensis ) is one of the Asian rainforest species of the genus of owls . Its habitat are the rain-rich forest regions of the Himalayas , Indochina and Malaysia . Due to its striking, human-like reputation, the Nepaluhu is also known as the " ulama " or " devil bird " in some regions of Sri Lanka .

It reaches a height of 51 to 61 cm and prefers to live on rodents and smaller birds . However, due to its size, it is also able to hit jackals and larger chicken birds .

Just like the striped uhu and the Malay uhu, the Nepaluhu breeds in the dry season. Otherwise little is known about its breeding biology.
