Nepenthes veitchii is a carnivorous plant from the genus of pitcher plants ( Nepenthes ). It wasfirst describedby Joseph Dalton Hooker around 1860. Your species name honors the botanist and breeder Peter CM Veitch .
description
From veitchii Nepenthes there are two growth types: the "type Sumatra," the on Sumatra lives, grows exclusively on the ground and crawling rosettes forms, and the "type of Borneo," the on Borneo especially on Mount Kinabalu is to find and liana-like on trees climbed up. The leaves of Nepenthes veitchii are covered with dark hairs. They are up to 25 cm long and obovate.
The pitchers of Nepenthes veitchii are tympani to cup-shaped and do not change their shape with increasing age. While "Type Sumatra" always puts the pitchers down on the ground, "Type Borneo" clings them to the climbing support. All Nepenthes veitchii pitchers have a characteristic that is typical of the species: the excessively wide and expansive peristome . This is hardly folded back after opening the jug, but sticks out like a fan on both sides. The sash is wide. The lid is narrowly elliptical.
Inflorescence, flower and seeds
Like all other Nepenthes species, Nepenthes veitchii is dioecious, separate sexes ( dioecious ), that is, on a plant there are either only male or only female flowers . The flowers stand together paniculate inflorescences . The unisexual flower contains five bracts and has a dark, reddish color.
The spindle-shaped seeds are only 2 to 3 mm in size.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 80.
distribution
Nepenthes veitchii lives mainly on Sumatra and Borneo . It prefers light, mist-shrouded mountain forests at altitudes of up to 900 meters.
Endangerment status
Because of its bizarre appearance, Nepenthes veitchii is a sought-after collector's item. This and the clearing of their habitat for agricultural purposes has resulted in Nepenthes veitchii being protected on Appendix 2 in the Washington Convention on Endangered Species (CITES). Trading in this species is therefore only permitted to a limited extent.
