The yellow-banded Schnake ( Nephrotoma crocata ) is a mosquito from the family of the Schnaken (Tipulidae).
features
The snakes reach a body length of almost 20 mm. The basic color of the gnats is black. There is an orange spot on the head above the antenna base. The thorax has yellow spots on the sides. 3 to 4 lemon-yellow horizontal stripes run across the abdomen . The females have a bulbous abdomen that tapers towards the rear and ends in a short laying apparatus . The females have 13-limbed antennae , while the males have 19 limbs.
distribution
The yellow-bound schnake occurs in large parts of Europe. The species is also represented in Great Britain . To the south their distribution area extends to North Africa, to the east to Central Asia and Pakistan .
Way of life
The gnat species prefers areas with water-permeable sandy soils. The gnats are mostly seen on hedges, on the edges of forests or in gardens. The yellow-bound Schnake forms two generations per year. The gnats fly in May and June. The females carry the upside-down male during mating . The female sticks the eggs one by one into the ground with her laying apparatus. The larvae living in the ground feed on the roots of various grasses. The adult flies suckle plant nectar.
