The Neptun was a warship that was built for the city of Zurich in 1693 .

history

Before the Neptun, the city owned the two warships "Biber" and "Otter", which were reinforced in 1693 with the two sister ships "Seepferd" and "Neptun". In a contemporary description it says: «They are in the form of a galley, in each of which there are two chambers and two galleries on which one can plant stucco (artillery). There are also gables on it for the double hoes and 2 rows of benches for the rowers. You can bring them into the lake with little effort, because the water next to the huts is deep, and like a sea port, fenced in and covered with trees. They are the same size. Each has a strange (special) captain. "

The Neptun could be equipped with up to 18 cannons and stone mortars . Two two-pounder cannons from 1692, the "Hecht" and the "Karpf" are now kept in the State Museum. The crew consisted of 25 rowers armed with rifles and bayonets and 12 gunners. There was space for an additional 32 marines in case of war. The inscription on the sail reads “Deo Duca” (“God leads”). The ship's officer on the Neptun was Johann Obrist von Zollikon . On September 8, 1783, the Neptun took part in a training maneuver for a naval battle on Lake Zurich with numerous other ships. During the Toggenburg War, the Neptun was used to transport troops to Toggenburg .

The port of the two warships was roughly on the site of the present-day "Baur au Lac" hotel. The naval arsenal on the ship's head was created in 1656 and was protected by a wooden palisade . Around 1840 the area was filled up to Bürkliplatz .

By the 1790s, Neptune and Seahorse had become dilapidated and needed to be replaced. The much larger successor ship was built according to English plans from 1791 by a shipbuilder from Bregenz and later completed by the fountain maker Fenner from Wiedikon. It had its first voyage in 1793, was armed around 1795 and was called "City of Zurich".
