The Nerpitschje Lake ( Russian Нерпичье ), also Nerpitsch called, is a slightly salty lake in the Kamchatka .

Lake Nerpichye is an average of 4.4 meters deep and its deepest point is 12 meters. It covers about 552 km² and is therefore the largest lake on the peninsula. It is connected to the Kamchatka River estuary via the short Osjornaya River . There is the small town of Ust-Kamchatsk . The city's airfield is located on the southern shore of the lake. Gradually penetrating sea water turns the lake into a salt lake.

Because of its uneven shape, it forms a second, smaller lake called Kultutschnoje .

The lake is very rich in fish. It houses herring , salmon , grayling and smelt , for example . Steller's sea lions and ringed seals rest and gather on the sandbar between sea and lake . Dolphins also live in the lake. The area around the lake is a busy bird area with seagulls , hornlunds and many duck species.

Origin of name

His name Nerpichye comes from the Russian word Нерпа (nerpa), which means something like "(freshwater) poetry". The Turkish word Kultuchnoye means "lagoon".
