Nessos is a card game by the Japanese game authors Takaaki Sayama and Toshiki Arao , originally published under the title Bakudan Takarabako by the Japanese publisher Comet and in 2018 by the publisher IELLO as Nessos . The game is a bluff and deduction game. Originally it was thematically a game in which pirates had to collect as many treasures as possible and avoid bombs. IELLO set the game thematically in Greek mythology .

Theme and equipment

In the game, players have to try to collect the most valuable amphora cards with mythical creatures from Greek mythology. At the same time, they avoid getting Charon cards .

In addition to instructions, the game material consists of:

Style of play

Before the game, depending on the number of players, cards are removed from the deck of cards in accordance with the game instructions; the full number of cards is only used in a game with 5 or 6 players. At the beginning of the game and after shuffling, each player receives five cards face down, the remaining cards form the draw pile. Then a starting player is determined who receives the starting player figure.

Starting with a starting player, the game is played clockwise. The active player chooses one of his hand cards and offers it face down to another player of his choice. He can either choose a mythical creature card and must say the number on the card aloud, or choose a Charon card and say any card number (and lie). The player who is offered the card can accept it unseen and place it face up in front of him, reject it unseen and return it to the offering player, who has to place it face up in front of him, or he can add his own card and these two cards to the card with the announcement of the number (or any number in the case of a Charon card) to another player. The player to whom these two cards are now offered may either accept or reject them again and add another card and offer it to another player. A set may never be offered to a player who already has cards in the set. Once there are three cards in the set, none may be added.

The round ends when a player puts the cards in front of him. If the revealed cards are mythical creature cards, the respective player can credit himself the points according to the numbering of the cards. If a player manages to collect a set of card values 1, 2 and 3, he receives an additional 10 bonus points. If the revealed cards are Charon cards, the player receives no points - as soon as a player has three Charon cards in front of him, he loses the game and is eliminated. If at the end of the round no player has met the victory conditions, the players with fewer than 5 cards can replenish their number of cards to 5. The player to the left of the previous starting player becomes the next starting player.

If a player exceeds a predetermined total, which is based on the number of players, he wins the game. The game ends when either one player reaches the specified number of points or only one player is left in the game. Even if a total of 9 Charon cards are revealed, the game ends; in that case the player with the highest number of points wins.
