Nether Largie Mid

The Nether Largie Mid Cairn is located between Cairns Nether Largie South and Nether Largie North on a low terrace in the valley of Kilmartin in Argyll and Bute in Scotland . It was excavated in 1929. The excavation revealed two empty stone boxes .

The cairn was about 30 meters in diameter and was about three meters high until the 1920s. Just before it was excavated, much of the mound had been removed for road construction. It is now an irregular platform of stones, up to a meter high, within which several curbs, especially on the western arc, can be seen. The position of the northern one, which lies in a pit under the cairn, is now only indicated by low posts. The box near the southern edge of the cairn is visible.

The north chest

This northeast-southwest facing stone box made of flat slabs measures 1.2 by 0.7 m and is 0.6 m deep. The massive, diamond-shaped capstone protruding on all sides measures 2.5 by 1.8 m. The side panels had been carefully fluted to hold the end panels.

The south box

The stone box was inserted into a pit dug in the gravel. It is shown today with the massive, supported capstone so that the inside is visible. The capstone is a large 0.28 m thick triangular slab with a side length of 1.9 m. The north-west-south-east facing stone box measures around 1.4 m × 0.6 m and is 0.55 m deep. On the inside of an end plate there is at least one recognizable cup (cupmarks) with a diameter of 50 mm and a depth of 10 mm. An ax from the Bronze Age is pecked in the center of the plate . It is 150 mm long, has 110 mm blade width and 70 mm head width.

Cup stone

About 9.5 m northeast of the stone box is a plate of 0.95 m × 0.63 m and 0.21 m thickness, the five bowl ( English cups ) contributes up to 50 mm in diameter and 10 mm depth.
