The Network Security Services ( NSS ; German " network security services ") are a collection of libraries for secure communication between client and server . They are mainly used by the Mozilla products Firefox and Thunderbird, and earlier by Google Chrome, to establish secure connections via the SSL , TLS , S / MIME and PKCS protocols. NSS supports various crypto algorithms for this .

Chrome (or Chromium) switched to BoringSSL in 2014 , a spin-off from OpenSSL .

NSS is also used by LibreOffice , the messenger Pidgin and companies such as Red Hat and Oracle for various products and is jointly developed by them with Mozilla. Of Apache OpenOffice NSS (2014 May) is also used in version 4.1.
