The Neuburg Castle Festival is a historical festival that takes place every two years on the last weekend in June and the first weekend in July in the historic old town of Neuburg an der Donau . It is held every two years to commemorate the Renaissance period , when Neuburg was the capital of the Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg .

Today's castle festival

The Neuburg Castle Festival took place for the first time in 1976. It was brought into being by Fritz von Philipp, Fritz Seebauer, Norbert Hohenester, Matthias Schieber, Anton Sprenzel and the then Lord Mayor of Neuburg, Theo Lauber. In the beginning, the Neuburg Castle Festival took place annually, since 1983 it has taken place every two years. The Rahmfleck was created for the 1985 Castle Festival . The 24th edition of the Castle Festival took place in 2017. The castle festival is now the largest Renaissance festival in the German-speaking region with around 55,000 visitors per weekend.

The Castle Festival begins with the arrival of the guests (Castle Festival Committee, Lord Mayor, Council of the City of Neuburg, guests) at the Danube Quay and the subsequent move into the Upper City. During the entire event, there will be a historical fair with around 150 stalls where numerous historical goods are for sale. Some of the events that take place as part of the castle festival are the tournament games (hunting and fighting games of the electoral riders), dance and jokes at court (representation of life at Ottheinrich's court), numerous concerts by various music groups, several fanfare parades, as well as foreign guests such as an Italian Flag thrower group. The highlight of the castle festival is the fire theater on the Danube, which takes place on the Saturday of the second weekend, a musical fireworks display to match the music of the Neuburger Steckenreitertanz. On the last day of the event, there is a pageant through the city, the so-called “Castle Festival Parade”.

The history

The historical background is formed by the reign of the Count Palatine and Elector Ottheinrich , while Neuburg became the capital of the Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg . He also shaped the appearance of the city of Neuburg with his building projects. Ottheinrich was known for his splendid lifestyle. He was an extremely well-read prince who loved tournaments. The wedding of Ottheinrich's maternal grandfather Georg (Bavaria) with Hedwig Jagiellonica (1457–1502) also provides the historical basis for another well-known historical festival, the Landshut Wedding . On the other hand, the Neuburg Castle Festival is based on the marriage of Philipp Ludwig (Pfalz-Neuburg ) returned with Princess Anna von Jülich-Kleve-Berg on September 27, 1574. The wedding was celebrated for five days in the residential city of Neuburg. The ring piercing of the distinguished guests on the second wedding day and the foot tournament on the following day were particularly splendid. The description of these festivities was rediscovered by the co-founder of the historical association Neuburg, Josef Benedikt Grassegger, in 1824 and in the same year on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reign of King Maximilian I Joseph (Bavaria) a ring piercing and pageant were held. This tournament was in turn the model for the tournament games that have been held since 1977 on the occasion of the Neuburg Castle Festival, which take place in the courtyard of the Marstall built by Count Palatine Philipp Ludwig in 1594.
