The Landshut Wedding is a historical festival that lasts several weeks and is currently performed every four years in the summer in Landshut , the last time from June 30th to July 24th 2017. It is a reminder of the Bavarian wedding in Landshut in 1475 Duke George the Rich with Hedwig Jagiellonica , daughter of the Polish King Casimir IV. Andrew , celebrated. The festival was included in the nationwide directory of intangible cultural heritage in 2018 .

Historic wedding

The marriage between Georg and Hedwig was of great political importance, because the union of the two sexes represented a strong alliance against the power of the Ottomans. The marriage was preceded by intensive discussions between the two royal houses in 1474, and the marriage was negotiated through embassies in Cracow .

18-year-old Hedwig's bridal trip began in the autumn of the following year. It lasted two months and led on the then poorly developed trade routes via Berlin , Wittenberg , Leipzig , Altenburg , Zwickau , Oelsnitz / Vogtl, among others . and, changing the planned route, via Eger and Regensburg , taking a detour to Nuremberg , before Hedwig and her bride-to-be, Otto II von Neumarkt , arrived in Landshut. Here the marriage aspirant was warmly welcomed by the princes and bishops who had traveled. The Elector of Brandenburg, Albrecht Achilles , compared the wedding with a divine providence for the benefit of Christianity and the Empire .

The wedding took place on November 14th and 15th, 1475 in Landshut. The bride and groom were married by Salzburg's Archbishop Bernhard von Rohr at the parish church of St. Martin , which dominates the city . The bridal procession then led through the old town to the town hall. There the Emperor Friedrich III. the bride to the wedding dance. It is reported that ten thousand guests attended, drank, danced and enjoyed the jousting tournament at the event.

The lavish celebrations, which lasted several days, were recorded in great detail by chroniclers. In a time of awakening national pride in the German Empire , the State Hall of Landshut Town Hall was renovated around 1880; Munich artists painted the walls with scenes of the Landshut wedding in 1475. These motifs were appealing and gave citizens the idea to re-enact the historical events. For this purpose the association Die Förderer e. V. , who presented the bridal procession to the public for the first time a year later.

Today's historical festival

After the wedding was re-enacted for the first time by 145 participants in 1903 and a "festival as an introduction to the historical wedding events" was staged by Georg Schaumberg in 1905 , the move has matured to this day more into a historical documentary play in which large parts of the citizenry join: In the meantime, over 2000 participants in historical clothing from various stands take part.

From 1903 to 1914 and from 1922 to 1938 the parades took place annually, from 1950 to 1968 and again from 1975 to 1981 every three years. The Landshut wedding has been celebrated every four years since 1985. During the two world wars, the celebrations were eliminated, as from 1968 to 1975 after 1970 destroyed a fire numerous props and to a burst water pipe in the Gros had drawn the costumes affected.

The highlight is the Sunday on which the wedding procession and the wedding party move through the old town of Landshut. Other events show life in the camp, equestrian and knight games or the "Mummenschanz", which take place on the so-called Zehrplatz. The celebrations are still organized by the association Die Förderer e. V. , whose number of members has now risen to over 7,000. The approximately 2300 performers are Landshut citizens who enjoy reenacting the wedding in authentic historical clothing - for example, it is a tradition for male and female performers to let their hair grow long until the event, following the medieval model.
