overview

For the fountain festival, the city's 35 fountains are festively decorated and illuminated when night falls . Singers and musicians move from fountain to fountain and serenade each one. Locals and guests accompany them or hike in small groups through the city center, which is closed to traffic on these days, to visit the individual fountains and enjoy the harmony of water To delight blossoms and light. According to the mayor, “thousands of visitors come every year” and it is “next to the Luisenburg Festival (the) most important advertising medium” for the place.

history

The Wunsiedler Brunnenfest has a long history, although the year of origin is not known exactly. There is a legend that once in a hot summer the pipe wells in the streets of the city had dried up and people and cattle suffered great shortages as a result. When the water returned, wreaths were tied in thanks and the fountains were decorated with them. What was not known at the time is the fact that it was a revival of an ancient pagan custom. Once it was believed all over Europe that the spirits of springs and waters could be favored by offering them fresh flowers in a magical form.

It was the bourgeoisie who tied the wreaths of flowers for the water dispensers from year to year on the eve of St. The city authorities, on the other hand, did not like to see such old customs and repeatedly tried to prevent “cleaning the wells”, but they did not succeed. The residents of the individual wells formed well communities and competed with each other in decorating the water boxes. On June 24, 1879, a report from the six offices appeared in the local newspaper Bote, which read: “Yesterday, Midsummer Eve, different people competed on the conventional lighting and decoration of all local public fountains ... Since the evening was a very beautiful one, there was also a very large crowd moving in the streets, moving from one fountain to another ”. When the high-pressure water pipeline was set up in the city in 1899, the citizens forced the old pipe boxes to remain on the old streets. Even today, wells are built in public buildings or in private houses.
