New Berlin chess newspaper

The Neue Berliner Schachzeitung was a German chess magazine that appeared monthly between 1864 and 1871. As the name made visible, was a leading alternative to date, from the Berlin Chess Club in 1846 founded Schachzeitung .

Rival of the older "chess newspaper"

The editorial staff of the older Berlin “Schachzeitung” had relocated when the Veit & Comp publishing house moved. It was published in Leipzig since 1860 under the editorship of Max Lange ; since 1865 Johannes Minckwitz was its main editor and editor.

It was Gustav Richard Neumann who convinced the Berlin publisher Julius Springer that the Prussian capital should not go without a chess magazine. The “Neue Schachzeitung” was initially published by Adolf Anderssen and Neumann, who did not return to Berlin from the tournament in Paris in 1867. From 1867, Anderssen's pupil from Wroclaw, Johannes Zukertort , who had only recently arrived in Berlin, became Neumann's co-editor as successor. From then on he did the editorial work. Anderssen's involvement, who at that time was considered the strongest chess player in the world alongside Wilhelm Steinitz , was probably mainly for advertising purposes. He took no significant part in the editorial work.

The content of the “Neue Schachzeitung” differed little from the Leipzig magazine. With numerous commented games, opening analyzes and a problem part , she implicitly claimed to force the rival organ out of the leading role. Between the two magazines, namely between Zukertort and Minckwitz, a partly polemical dispute arose over actual or alleged editorial errors.

End of the magazine

The Neue Berliner Schachzeitung was not financially successful. With the December 1871 issue (which only appeared in February 1872) the magazine was discontinued. The publishing bookstore Julius Springer justified the move towards the readers with the irregular appearance and blamed Zukertort for this. A little later, Zukertort decided to continue his career as a professional chess player in London .
