New Synagogue (Wroclaw)
The New Synagogue, also known as the Liberal or “Main Synagogue”, was the synagogue of the liberal Jewish community in Wroclaw . It was on Anger No. 8 in Breslau . Like the Hanover Synagogue and the Königsberg Synagogue, it was designed in the style of eclecticism and historicism based on the models of the Worms and Aachen Cathedral . The construction followed Edwin Oppler's designs . The synagogue was opened in 1872 and destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 .
description
The building was designed for 2,000 worshipers. The domed central building was adorned with four polygonal, low corner towers. A rose window was visible over the main portal . In contrast to the other synagogues, the Breslau synagogue had the advantage of being on a freely accessible property and being able to be viewed from all sides.
The sacred building was designed by Edwin Oppler , an architect from Oels , between 1865 and 1872. On September 29, 1872, at Rosh Hashanah , the inauguration was carried out by Gedalja Tiktin , an Orthodox rabbi , and by Manuel Joel , a liberal rabbi. It was the second largest in the country after the New Synagogue in Berlin . The synagogue was destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 , with only the wrought-iron fence around the synagogue being preserved. Today there is a memorial stone on the synagogue site, on which can be read in Hebrew, Polish and German:
