The New Lighthouse is Germany's southernmost lighthouse in Lindau in Lake Constance and is therefore the only lighthouse in Bavaria. It has a total size of 36 m, a platform height of 33 meters and a circumference of 24 meters at the base. Its fire height is given as 35 m - the height above the water level continues to vary with the seasonally fluctuating water level of the lake. It is one of the few lighthouses that has a clock in the facade.

history

It was built between 1853 and 1856 at the end of the western pier at the port entrance and put into operation on October 4, 1856. This made it the successor to the Mangturm, which was built in 1230.

technology

The interior of the tower

For the first six years of its existence, the light was generated by an oil fire. At that time, the beacon keeper had to keep the fire in large pans independently and operate the fog bell or the bellows for the fog horn . Then they switched to petroleum and later to gas.

The tower has been operated electrically since 1936. It was fully automated in the early 1990s. If necessary, the fire is activated by the ships by radio.

Identifier

The lighthouse shows a flash of lightning that lights up every three seconds through two rotating parabolic headlights.

Todays situation

The lighthouse in the ensemble with the Bavarian Lion

For many years the tower was operated by the Deutsche Bahn , Bodenseeschifffahrt department, but then sold to the Stadtwerke Konstanz together with Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe GmbH and the Lindau harbor area . After several years of negotiations between Konstanz and Lindau, the port area and thus the tower were returned to Lindau at the beginning of 2010. It is open to visitors who can find information on the flora and fauna of the area, the weather and the history of Lake Constance shipping .

Together with the 6 m high (without base) Bavarian Lion at the end of the east pier, it is a landmark and one of Lindau's most popular photo motifs.

Philatelic

On June 11, 2015, Deutsche Post AG issued a postage stamp to the value of 62 euro cents with the motif of the lighthouse as an extension of the lighthouses stamp series. The design comes from the graphic designer Johannes Graf from Dortmund.
