The New Landscape Building was erected from 1774 onwards according to a design by the Munich builder François de Cuvilliés the Younger , but was only completed after his death.

The building initially served as a meeting place for the Bavarian state estates , the new building was built to replace the old landscape building on Marienplatz. After the state estates were dissolved in 1808, the building served, among other things, as an educational institute before the German Master School of Fashion moved in in 1931 , which it still houses today.

Land estates in Bavaria

In the historical and original context, landscape means the totality of the estates in a medieval and early modern state in the sense of the estate order . The estates are the representations (estates corporations) in the territories of the Roman German Empire . In the 17th century, with the Thirty Years' War and the growing power of the sovereign principality (according to the ideas of absolutism ) the decline of the estates began in Bavaria as well. This continued in the 18th century. In 1669 the state parliament was convened for the last time. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the estates was not abolished in the 18th century. Instead of the (full) state parliaments, the corporate bodies with their administrations now monitored state activities and ensured orderly finances.

architecture

The building was built in the late Rococo and heralds the Empire with stricter and more classical forms . It has a high hipped roof and is bordered by colossal corner pillars. There are six window axes on either side of the central portal, which is decorated with double pilasters . The ground floor is rusticated and has a mezzanine . The main floor is highlighted by segment gables and window balconies. There are column-supported vaults in the entrance hall. Little has been preserved of the original furnishings because of the frequent changes of ownership.

An attached, narrow three-storey, three-axis connecting building from 1906 connects to the neighboring building of the main fire station in the south .
