history

In 1857 , Jean Neuhaus , who came from Switzerland , founded a confiserie pharmaceutique in Brussels , which produced cough drops and other health items, but also chocolate bars. Under his son Frédéric Neuhaus (1846–1912), a trained pastry chef , the business gradually switched to pure pleasure products and in 1895 it was renamed "Confiserie et Chocolaterie Neuhaus-Perrin". After Frédéric's death in 1912, the founder's grandson, Jean Neuhaus (1877–1953), took over the business. He first introduced pralines in the modern sense. Management was passed on to his son-in-law Adelson de Gavre and then to his son Pierre.

In 1978, Neuhaus was taken over by Jean-Jacques and Claude Poncelet, owners of the chocolate manufacturer Verhaeren et Mondose . Under them, the company expanded worldwide. In 1987 it was sold on to the Tirlemontoise refinery belonging to ARTAL . In 1989 Mondose was integrated into the Neuhaus brand. From 1997 to 2006 Neuhaus was listed on the Euronext stock exchange . The Compagnie du Bois Sauvage has held the majority share since 1998 .
