Religious meanings and contexts
Judaism and Christianity
In the Old Testament , 99 years is a symbolic age: Abraham was 99 years old when God appeared to him ( Gen 17.1 EU ). In the New Testament , the 99 (as 100 minus 1) in the parable of the hundred sheep has a symbolic meaning: God is more pleased about the one sheep that has been found lost than about the 99 sheep that have not lost their way. ( Mt 18.12 EU ), see also the parable of the prodigal son .
The numerical value of the word Amen was interpreted as 99 according to the Gematria of the old church (A = 1, M = 40, E = 8, N = 50).
Islam
In Islam , the 99 names of Allah have a religious meaning. According to a hadith, this tradition goes back to a traditional saying by Muhammad that Allah had ninety-nine names, one less than a hundred . In the teaching of the Mu'tazila these names were considered to be identical to Allah. In Sufism , the meditative repetition of the 99 names is an important part of approaching Allah.
In Arabic poetry it is a circumscribing number: the poet Imrulqais (6th century) demands 99 kisses “and one more” from his lover. The old Arab hero Shanfara, who swore to kill a hundred enemies, is slain by the ninety-ninth, but fatally injures the hundredth enemy with one of his bone fragments.
The 99 names of Allah are shown in the painting as the “Muhammadan Rose”.
Everyday culture
In pricing, the 99 (interpreted as “not yet 100”) has a psychological meaning ( broken price or threshold price ).
99 Luftballons is a successful pop song by the singer Nena from 1983. 99 is a song from 1979 by Toto .
Wayne Gretzky , who is considered the best ice hockey player of all time, wore the shirt number 99 during his career, which has not been given to any NHL player since the end of his career .
