New Bullards Bar Dam is a dam in California (USA) on the Yuba River that forms the New Bullards Bar Reservoir, which contains a storage space of 1,184 million cubic meters. The reservoir is located near the city of Dobbins in Yuba County . The dam is operated by the Yuba County Water Agency and is used for irrigation, drinking water supply and electricity generation from hydropower .

The barrier structure consists of an arch dam with a variable radius. The wall has a height of 197 m (this is also given as 194 or 195 m). This makes the dam among the 100 highest on earth. In terms of storage space , it is among the largest 200.

At the end of the dam crest on the left bank there is a flood relief system in the form of a segment weir with three gates. This is followed by a steep chute with a jump-like termination for energy dissipation , over which the chipped water falls into the gorge of the Yuba River. An additional relief system has been in the planning and approval process since 2018. Its inlet threshold is to be 31.5 feet (approx. 10 meters) lower than that of the existing system in order to have greater leeway in flood management, since the lake level could be further lowered before heavy rainfall occurs. In addition, an independent, redundant discharge system would significantly increase dam safety, as the incident on neighboring Lake Oroville in February 2017 showed. The drainage of the water would also take place through a tunnel on the left bank near the stand. Construction is scheduled to start in 2022.

The powerhouse New Colgate powerhouse is not at the dam, but 8 km downstream, making the drop height is increased. The two Pelton turbines from Voith have a combined output of 325 megawatts and had the largest Pelton wheels in the world on delivery. They have a diameter of 5.4 m and weigh 44.5 t and were manufactured by the Swiss steel foundry Georg Fischer in Schaffhausen .

There is also a small power plant at the foot of the dam, which was built in 1986. It has an output of 150 kW and ensures that residual water is discharged into the drainage route for the fish fauna.
