List of geostationary satellites |
New Dawn is a commercial communications satellite owned by the Luxembourg- based company Intelsat .
It was put into geostationary orbit on April 22, 2011 with an Ariane 5 from the Center Spatial Guyanais together with Yahsat 1A .
The contract to Orbital to build the satellite was placed in late 2008. The project was developed through a joint venture between Intelsat and a South African investor group led by Convergence Partners . The total costs amount to about 250 million US dollars, 15% of which is raised by equity and 85% by credit. Intelsat contributes 75% of the equity.
The three-axis stabilized satellite has 14 (according to other sources 16 or 24) Ku and 16 transponders (14 × 72 MHz loop-back + 2 × 72 MHz uplink only cross-strapped, according to another source 28) C-band and two 2, 5 × 2.7 m antennas and is to supply the African continent with television and broadband internet from a position about 33 ° East. The energy supply is provided by four gallium arsenide solar cell surfaces and two 4.8 kWh lithium-ion batteries. New Dawn has been based on the STAR-2 - satellite bus of Orbital Sciences built and has a design life of 15 years.
