The Newag E6ACT Dragon is an electric locomotive developed and built in Poland for passenger and heavy goods traffic from the manufacturer Newag Gliwice . Fourteen machines have been built so far; a diesel and a three-system variant are offered, but have not yet found any buyers.
history
The prototype of the Dragon was presented at the TRAKO 2009 trade fair in Gdansk , and in 2010 it was also presented at the InnoTrans in Berlin. The locomotive was tested in 2011 by the companies LOTOS Kolej and STK from Wroclaw . In October 2011, STK signed a contract to buy four machines, and LOTOS Kolej signed a letter of intent to buy locomotives of this type. At the end of 2011, series production began in Gliwice. On December 23, 2011, the locomotive was approved by the Polish Railway Transport Authority. In September 2012, LOTOS Kolej finally decided to buy 5 machines. In September 2013 the second Dragon locomotive was completed and painted in the black and orange design by STK. STK has been using this locomotive since December 2014. The five machines for LOTOS Kolej were delivered from January to May 2014. One of these machines was transferred to InnoTrans in Berlin in September 2014.
Freightliner PL has been renting another five locomotives from ING Leasing since 2016 . These are equipped with an additional 520 kW diesel drive to operate non-electrified rail connections. The first locomotive was christened Ernest Malinowski in June 2016 . At the end of July 2016, the fifth and last locomotive was on test drives. It is also the last locomotive built at the Gliwice plant.
Nine of the Dragon locomotives delivered to date are only used on the Polish direct current network. The five Freightliner units also run on routes without overhead lines.
In October 2018 PKP Cargo signed a contract for the purchase of three Dragon 2 E6ACTa. The locomotives have already been produced and are awaiting regulatory approval for commissioning, which is expected by the end of this year.
In December 2019, Lotos Kolej signed a contract for the rental of six locomotives, financed by Millenium Leasing. NEWAG will deliver two Dragon-2 locomotives in 2019. Another four electric locomotives will go into operation in 2020. The Lotos railway company has had three Dragon 2 locomotives in its fleet since March 2019.
construction
The E6ACT has the Co'Co 'axis sequence and is equipped with 6 asynchronous travel motors. The machine was developed for 3 kV direct current and is now also available as a diesel and three-system version. It has an eddy current brake and a mechanical brake system. It is equipped with a computer-aided control and diagnosis system. The locomotive body was designed as a self-supporting welded construction.
