Newfel Ouatah (born November 8, 1985 in Lyon , France ) is a French-Algerian boxer , 2007 African champion and 2008 Olympian in Beijing .

Career

Newfel Ouatah comes from an Algerian family who emigrated to France from Beni Djellil . He grew up in Lyon and started boxing in 1998 at Club Pugillistique Villerbannais's Gym . At a height of 2.00 meters, it weighs approx. 91 kg and can therefore alternate between heavy and super heavy weights. He was already very successful as a junior and was French junior champion four times in a row from 2000 to 2003 (medium, light and heavyweight).

In 2004 he started for France at the Junior World Championships in Jeju-si / South Korea and finished there in the heavyweight division after a point defeat in the quarterfinals against the Cuban Robert Alfonso a good 5th place.

In 2005, Newfel Ouatah was the first time French heavyweight champion in the seniors. He defeated John M'Bumba in the semifinals by canceling in the 4th round and Stephane Gomis by canceling in the 3rd round. He repeated this title win in 2006 with a knockout victory in the first round in the final over John M'Bumba. At the Mediterranean Games in Almería in 2005 , he took 3rd place in the heavyweight division. In the semifinals he lost to Mohamed Homrani from Tunisia by breaking off in the 3rd round.

In autumn 2006, Newfel Ouatah, who has both French and Algerian citizenship, decided to compete in future international championships for Algeria . He received approval from the French association.

In 2007 he was defeated on points in the final of the French heavyweight championship by John M'Bumba. In the same year he was then in Tananarivo / Madagascar for the first time African heavyweight champion. He defeated Lamarna Conde from Guinea on points in the final . At the All-African Games in 2007 in Algiers , he reached the final with wins over Larmarna Conde and Remy Atsama, Cameroon , in which he lost on points against Emad Abdelhalim Ali from Egypt (8:17).

In 2008, Newfel Ouatah qualified in a tournament in Algiers with victories over Stephane Gomis, Senegal and Mohamed Amanissi, Morocco , in the super heavyweight division for participation in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .
