The Newport-class was a class of armored landing craft in the United States Navy . The total of 20 units of the type came into service between 1969 and 1972. The Newport class ships were retired between 1992 and 2002. Eleven units then went to various navies for further service.
history
The Newport-class ships were designed to replace the obsolete tank landing ships from World War II . They are far superior to these units in terms of their dimensions and the capacity of the transportable vehicles. The most significant feature of the ships was the 34 meter long landing ramp at the bow, which was designed for loads of up to 75 tons. The Newport-class units also had a tailgate, which made them suitable for transporting Assault Amphibious Vehicles .
The first Newport-class ships were decommissioned in 1992, the last in 2002. Eleven of the total of 20 units were transferred to the Royal Australian Navy , Marinha do Brasil , the Chilean Navy , the Malaysian Navy , the Mexican Navy and the Royal Navy Maritime of Morocco , the Peruvian Navy , the Navy of the Republic of China and the Armada Española . Some of these units are still in service today. The remaining 9 ships were scrapped in the reserve fleet after several years or sunk as target ships. The last US-owned Newport-class unit is the USS Boulder (LST-1190) in the reserve fleet.
