Newton House (Islay)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Newton House is a building on the Hebridean island of Islay . It is located about 900 m east of the village of Bridgend south of the A846 between Bridgend and Ballygrant . The Sorn passes the building a few hundred meters south. On August 28, 1980, the building was placed on the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

Newton House was once part of a settlement that has since been abandoned. A whiskey distillery called Newton was operated there between 1816 and 1839 , of which individual buildings could still be preserved as outbuildings of Newton House.

description

The exact construction date of the house is not given, so that only the early 19th century can be given as the construction period. The one-storey building with a loft was built in a traditional way. It ends with a slate-covered hip roof . The facades are plastered using the traditional Harling technique. Of the two outer buildings to the north, one also has a hipped roof, the second closes with a pyramid roof .
