Nexit

Nexit is a short term for the possible exit of the Netherlands from the European Union (EU).

The word formation Nexit is the term United Kingdom and Gibraltar European Union membership referendum for withdrawal from the EU of the United Kingdom modeled: It is a portmanteau of "Ne" (for "Netherlands" or Dutch "Nederland") and "exit" (English for exit).

General election 2017

As the only top politician in the Netherlands, the chairman of the right-wing populist Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV), Geert Wilders , called for the exit from the European Union. Before the parliamentary election on March 15, 2017 , he announced that he would hold an exit referendum if he should become the next prime minister. However, Wilders did not become the strongest force.

Survey

According to polls by the Pew Research Center from June 2016 - shortly before the EU membership referendum in the UK in 2016 - 46 percent of the population in the Netherlands saw the EU as unfavorable. This was the sixth worst result among the evaluated EU countries (Germany was in fifth place with 48 percent). According to a survey by the news magazine EenVandaag in June 2016, 48 percent of Dutch people voted to leave the EU and 45 percent to remain in the EU.
