Gotthilf August Benjamin Schierenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gotthilf August Benjamin Schierenberg (born March 18, 1808 in Horn , † October 21, 1894 in Lucerne ) was a German businessman, local researcher, amateur archaeologist and author as well as mayor of Horn and several times a member of the Lippe state parliament.

As a local researcher and amateur archaeologist, Schierenberg devoted himself in particular to the Externsteinen, on which he published numerous non-academic writings that did not even come close to scientific methods - some of which were self-published. The following was written about Schierenberg: "He became the horror of the philologists and the historical associations of his time and, for his part, complained bitterly about the treatment he had received in the final chapter of the above-mentioned book: The Martyrdom of a Dilettante."

August Schierenberg was married to Louise, born in 1857. Des Coudres († around 1875), who until 1863 ran a private school for girls in the Weißer Hirsch am Großer Hirschgraben in Frankfurt am Main . In 1891, a foundation established by Schierenberg managed to build a nursery for small children ( Karolinenanstalt ) in Horn. The building is now a listed building.
