Niall David Stephen Canavan (born April 11, 1991 in Leeds ) is an English football player who currently plays for the third division Scunthorpe United .

The defender has been a Scunthorpe United player since he was a teenager . He signed his first professional contract in April 2009. He played his first league game on August 22, 2009 in the 4-0 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday when he was substituted on for Rob Jones in the 28th minute . Just three days later, he scored his first goal in the League Cup game against Swansea City , which was won 2-1. Swansea City ended the game with just eight players after Àngel Rangel , Garry Monk and Gorka Pintado were sent off.

On his seventh use in the Football League Championship on May 2, 2010 Canavan scored his first goal in the league. He scored 2-1 in the home game against Nottingham Forest , the game ended in a 2-2 draw. In May 2010 he extended his contract with the Irons for three more years.
