Niccolò di Alessandro Machiavelli [ nikkoˈlɔ makjaˈvɛlli ] (* September 25, 1449 ; † before February 14, 1516 ) was a cousin and contemporary namesake of the well-known Florentine philosopher , politician , diplomat , historian and poet Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527).

Life

Niccolò di Alessandro di Filippo di Lorenzo di Filippo Machiavelli was descended from a great-great-uncle of the famous Florentine who was born about twenty years after him. Since the time between 1498 and 1512 both bearers of the name experienced political activities, there is sometimes a risk of confusion or the need to be mindful when encountering the sources.

Niccolò had a brother born in 1461 in Filippo di Alessandro Machiavelli. The siblings had been orphaned since 1469 but lived in their clan's houses in Oltrarno .

In 1475 Niccolò was the protagonist in a neighborly and family dispute when he entered the house of Bernardo di Niccolò Machiavelli , had secret sexual intercourse with his maid and fathered a child. After the pregnancy was discovered in the autumn of that year, he was obliged to secure a dowry, which the young woman from Pistoia expelled from the uncle's household. Bernardo complained that if he had known, he had taken precautions, 'acciò che io provedessi', so that his house would not be made into a brothel, 'che in casa mia non si facessi bordello'.

On April 21, 1501, Niccolò was selected at the side of Commissioner Giovanni Ridolfi for a posting to Pistoia to control the party riots there. Until June he stayed in this subject commune of the Republic of Florence .

The brother Filippo was Podestà of Pistoia in the spring of 1506 and in November 1512 . The latter date period indicates, with regard to the family branch, that it had not fallen into the disgrace of the Medici, who returned to Florence in September of that year. The prominent Niccolò Machiavelli, born in 1469, however, lost prestige and offices during this time.

Niccolò di Alessandro Machiavelli died at the beginning of 1516.
